Mr. Brainwash is a name used by the French-born, Los Angeles-based street artist Thierry Guetta. A provocative figure in the world of street art, he practises an irreverent brand of appropriation characterized by the use of copyrighted images from various design fields, popular culture and history. His work hinges on the idea that anything is possible. “Art has no walls. Anybody can be an artist” he says.
He rapidly emerged as a renowned figure on the international street art scene and in June 2008, Mr. Brainwash made his art debut with one of Los Angeles’s most memorable exhibitions called “Life is Beautiful”, held at the historic CBS Studios on Sunset Boulevard. Furthermore important auction houses such as Christie’s and Phillips, acquire his artworks extensively. During the London Fall 2010 Phillips Contemporary Art Sale, Mr. Brainwash had his second auction appearance with two works that sold for about $67.000 and $120.000 each, almost three times their original estimates.
